If it was a squirrel cage (aka non-salient pole) then you can't do it.
But if it was salient pole induction motor then you will have to excite the rotor windings with a D.C. supply either by carbon brushes or by a D.C. generator mounted on the rotor. But again you will lose the characteristic of being self-started as you know that synchronous motors are not self-started.

By the way, in order to make a synchronous motor self-started, they add a squirrel cage around the actual salient rotor and they run it like induction motor, once it is near the synchronous speed they energize the rotor coil with D.C. supply and it will continue running as synchronous motor.
