The oil surge relay is basically a buchholz relay having velocity function. If there is intenal fault such that it generates localized heating, the oil rushes from tank to conserator. There is a ring in path of oil.If it exceeds certain limit, the oil passes through sides and causes contacts to make resulting in tripping.Normal settings available are 65 cm/s ,100 cm/s,150 cm/s. Normally settings for oil surge relay in main bucholz relay is 100 cm/s in Pakistan. However, the settings of oil surge relay in tap changer is around 200 to 300 cm/s.Highet setting is to accomadate sudden rush of during tap changing.
Note that tripping of oil surge relay during transformer energization has been commonly observed. In this, giving it another try is nt a big deal if all other protections are normal.
